1. As a binder

 

·Wet granulation process: Wet granulation is often used in the preparation of tablets, capsules and other solid preparations. PVP K30 can be used as a binder, which can effectively bond drug powders together to form particles. For example, after mixing a variety of drug ingredients, adding an appropriate amount of PVP K30 solution (usually water or ethanol as a solvent), through stirring, granulating and other operations, so that the drug powder condensed into a certain size and strength of particles, easy to follow the tablet or filled capsules and other processes.

·dry granulation and direct tablet pressing: PVP K30 can better bind the drug powder after rolling and other treatment into particles during dry granulation; In the direct tablet process, the right amount of PVP K30 can enhance the bond between the drug powders, ensure that the tablet is well formed during the pressing process, and maintain the integrity of the tablet during storage and transportation.


2. As a co-solvent 

·Improve solubility of insoluble drugs: For some insoluble drugs, PVP K30 can be used as a cosolvent to improve its solubility in preparations. It can form complexes with drug molecules or make drug molecules better dispersed in solvents through solubilization. For example, some antibiotics have low solubility in water, and after adding POvidone K30, its solubility in water-based preparations can be significantly improved, which is conducive to the absorption of drugs in the body and the effect of the drug.

·Improved drug dissolution performance: Through drug interaction, PVP K30 enables faster dissolution of drugs in the dissolution medium, shortens the time to reach effective blood concentration, and improves drug bioavailability.


3. As a dispersant

·To ensure uniform dispersion of the drug: PVP K30 can be used as a dispersant in the preparation of suspension, emulsion, etc. It prevents the drug particles from agglomerating in the liquid medium and ensures that the drug particles are evenly dispersed in the system. For example, when preparing oral suspensions, PVP K30 allows the drug powder to be evenly dispersed in water-based media, avoiding drug precipitation or stratification, and ensuring that the drug content is uniform in each dose taken by the patient.

·Stable dispersion system: In addition to uniformly dispersing the drug, PVP K30 also acts as a stable dispersion system. By forming a protective film on the surface of the drug particles, it reduces the mutual attraction between the particles, thereby maintaining the stability of the dispersion system and extending the shelf life of the drug preparation.


4. As a film forming agent

· Film coating application: PVP K30 can be used as film forming agent in the film coating process of pharmaceutical preparations. It can form a uniform, tough and flexible film on the surface of solid preparations such as tablets and capsules. This film can play a role in protecting the drug from external environmental factors (such as light, air, humidity, etc.), and can also improve the appearance of the preparation, making it more beautiful and easy for patients to take.

·Membrane controlled release in slow-release preparations: Among some slow-release preparations (1), PVP K30 is also involved in the construction of membrane controlled release system (2). By combining with other excipients, it can form a film with specific permeability, control the speed of drug release from the inside of the preparation to the outside, achieve the effect of drug slow and controlled release, and meet different therapeutic needs.

5. As a thickening agent

·Regulating the viscosity of preparations: In some liquid preparations such as gels, syrups, etc., PVP K30 can be used as a thickener. It can increase the viscosity of the preparation and make it have suitable rheological properties. For example, in the preparation of ophthalmic gels, PVP K30 can make the viscosity of the gel reach the appropriate level, which can ensure that the drug stays in the eye long enough to facilitate drug absorption, and prevent the gel from being too thick and affecting the comfort of the patient.
